Choosing wisely a Website Promotion firm

There are several factors that website owners and webmasters should be aware of before finally contracting the services of a website marketing firm.

For example, you should be aware that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking in any of the search engines or directories since they do not have control over them. If someone claims that he can, choose someone else. What about those companies that "guarantee" you a #1 placement? Simple: they are off the hook if they can prove that you were #1 even if it was just for a few days. This way their guarantee will be intact even if now you are far from having a number one ranking the rest of the time.

SEO companies should be precise as to what exactly they intend to do to promote your website. If they tell you that it is something very complex and that you wouldn't understand it, or say that they can trick the search engines and that they will do in your behalf, or use doorway pages, choose someone  else or you run the risk of being banned from the search engines.
You are fully responsible for the actions of any SEO you hire, so it's best to be sure you know exactly how they will promote your website.

Stay away from SEOs that try to convince you about submitting your site information to the FFA (free-for-all) links, or submitting your site to hundred of thousands of search engines. These "strategies" don't work, can hurt your rankings in the major search engines, and you will keep being inundated with a gigantic amount of junk e-mails for a long time.

Don't be deceived by SEO's that try to convince you that they can control the Search Engines or Directories - no one can. They can try (to convince you) by combining pay-per-click or sponsored link results with regular web search results to prove to you that they can get a high ranking for your website. By purchasing an sponsored link or raising the bid price either your listing will be higher but this will not affect your rankings in your regular listings. Find out where your money is going.

Beware of  SEO's that don't seem to distinguish the difference between search results listings and the advertisements that appear right beside them. There is a big difference!

You should obtain a contract in writing that includes pricing for all services that will be performed. The contract should also require the SEO to keep within the guidelines recommended by each of the search engines for website submission or inclusion.

You should only use the services of SEO companies that can offer a guarantee in writing for their services.

If you believe that you have been deceived by a SEO company in some way, you may want to report it to the Federal Trade Commission. They take care of complaints about deceptive or unfair business practices. To file a complaint in the USa go to: http://www.ftc.gov/, or call 1-877-FTC-HELP. You can also contact them by writing to:  Federal Trade Commission, CRC-240, Washington, D.C. 20580

If you want to complain about a company in another country go to: http://www.econsumer.gov/
