Ranking is the level in which your listing can be found within a search engine in a given moment. The first listing in the search engine results is considered the highest ranking (not to be confused with PageRank). The listings that follows up to 9 below the first one are still considered to be ranking very high. Visibility is the key element for a any promotion or marketing campaign and it is essential for a site to be at least in the first 30 listings of the search engines results in order to be seen because visitors seldom go any further down than the fist 30.

There are many different factors by which a search engine rank websites using their algorithm particular to each S.E., but link popularity and keyword selection are the two most important methods by which search engines rank a website.

Link Popularity is defined as how popular or how many links are pointing to your website or backward links. The more backward links it has the more popular it is. However link popularity is not just how many websites are linking to yours but also how popular and relevant to your site these sites really are.

How you select your keywords you use and how you use them will weight heavily in the ranking process. The keywords that you use in your meta tags must also be in the visible

content of the website. These keywords should be selected according to their own popularity. However in order to compete effectively against other sites you must use them in the form of key-phrases instead of just keywords. In order to obtain the best ranking possible (keyword-wise) you must also choose the amount of keywords which should be from 8 to 15% of the words in your content (keyword density) depending on the search engine.

As I explained before these two are the most important things S.E. take into account when ranking a site but other factors like content, amount of words in each page, broken links, search engine spamming, etc. can help increase or lower a site’s ranking.
