Pop-ups are small windows that can appear on your browser and usually display some form of advertisement.

There are two types of pop ups: automatic and manual.

Automatic Pop Ups

Unwelcome automatic pop ups are those that appear on your Internet browser when you are visiting a web page and are usually designed to sell you something. These types of pop ups are not usually welcomed by website visitors since most of the time they are annoying, obtrusive and unexpected. Another type of automatic pop up is still even more intrusive an can show up on your desktop. These come from Spyware programs  or ‘Cookies’ that have been installed in your machine usually without your knowledge or consent.

Accepted Pop Ups. However there are some free programs like "Gator" (gator.com) which help users to automatically fill out forms and remembers user names and passwords. For this free service this company will (with your consent) pop up advertisings on your desktop when you visit some sites that have the same or similar products or services than the ones they advertise for their clients.

Welcomed automatic pop ups: However there are some that work very well for the merchants and are welcomed by site visitors. They are used in websites where products are sold and one or several of these advertised products (from that website) comes up in a pop up as a timed special offer in which the visitor will have a specified limit of time in which to respond to the offer in time or "loose" the special. However if you refresh the page or come back to that page latter on you will still (usually) have the opportunity to get the same special. The idea is just to create an incentive to buy, it doesn't really matter if the visitor tries to "outsmart" the webmaster by going back with a grin when he or she sees the special again and acts on it. The merchant's idea is just to sell and if the customer thought that he just outsmarted the merchant, well... the merchant is the one that is smiling now.

Manual Pop Ups

Manual pop ups are less intrusive since they must be activated by the user by clicking in a link or going over a link with the mouse in order for it to "pop up" on your browser. Click here to see a sample Pop Up. These pop ups also have some practical uses like showing up some information you want to display without making the user to go to another page.

How to create a manual pop up for your own site

Just copy and paste to a word document like word or works (very important or your pop up won't work). From word or works copy and paste directly in your HTML the following script. Just make sure to change the URL below for your URL (We are keeping it here just as an example). Also you can change the size of the pop up window in the script if you need to.
