Images and Website Promotion
Search engines cannot read images, and this even includes words that
are part of a graphic. If the search engines cannot index it, your website
might not get high ranks in them even if everything else is done right.
Images may also represent a problem for your visitors. A "heavy" image
will slow down your website from appearing in visitors browsers and they
will go some place else - remember- not everyone have DSL.
However these two problems can be easily fixed. In order to make it search engine friendly you must insert a tag in the graphic in order to make a sign (with a word or words that more or less says what the graphic is) appear on top of the image when the mouse goes over the image.
By making the graphic smaller, the page will load a lot faster. If you really need a larger graphic, you can make a link from the small graphic in the page to a much larger one in another page. Also if the image is JPEG and you convert it it to GIF it will reduce the "weight" of the image itself and the page will load a little faster although it will lower its quality. There are however still more tricks known by highly skilled web designers specialized in designing sites that display a lot of images. They can make a page full of graphics load much faster than normal.
